Fire Rips Through 3 School Buses In Birmingham
BIRMINGHAM (WWJ) - The Birmingham School District has lost three buses in its fleet after an overnight electrical fire at their bus yard.
Officials say they received a call around 1:15 a.m. Friday about a fire at the bus yard on Eaton and Holland streets, not far from Maple and Adams roads.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and found two buses fully engulfed and flames spreading through a third bus, all of which were parked outside of a maintenance garage.
Spokeswoman Marsha Wilkinson said its a costly loss for the district.
"The buses run between $60,000 and $80,000 depending on the different features that they have, but it does appear at this time that they're a total loss," she said.
Students have been off this week for Spring Break, so operations were not affected by the fires. No injuries were reported.
"We have been able to obtain some extra buses, so we'll be up and running on Monday as usual. Our bus service won't be interrupted," said Wilkinson.
The cause of the fire, which appears to be electrical in nature, remains under investigation.
