Fire At Kars Nuts Plant To Keep Factory Closed Though Weekend

MADISON HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Authorities are trying to figure out what caused a fire that shut down production at the Kars Nuts factory in Madison Heights.

Sixty workers were evacuated from the factory on 14 Mile, between John R and Dequindre, after the fire broke out around 7 p.m. Thursday.

Officials say the fire started in a product washing room located in the middle of the plant, which produces a variety of snack mixes and nuts.

Fire departments from five cities helped extinguish the blaze. No injuries were reported.

The washing room was heavily damaged by the fire, according to reports, and the entire building has smoke damage.

A statement from the company says all of the equipment is in working order, and production is expected to resume early next week.

"Our full workforce is here today and will be through the weekend cleaning all of our equipment, just to ensure it is completely safe before resuming production," the statement said. "We are working closely with health officials to ensure compliance every step of the way. The safety and quality of our products is our highest priority."

A cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The factory employs about 200 workers.
