Fire Destroys Vacant Detroit Building
DETROIT (WWJ) - The Detroit Fire Department faced a multi-alarm fire Friday night that completely destroyed an abandoned apartment complex.
The vacant complex at Cathedral Street and the Southfield Freeway went up in flames earlier in the evening, completely engulfing the 100-unit building.
Crews were fighting the fire from all angles. One WWJ listener said aerial units were even called in to battle the blaze, and large plumes of smoke could be seen from miles away.
The fire brought out hundreds of onlookers and police were called to control the traffic and crowds, many trying to take photos with their cell phones.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
