Fire Breaks Out At University Of Michigan Sorority House
ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - More than 60 students have been displaced after an early morning fire damaged their sorority house near the University of Michigan campus.
The fire broke out around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday in a third-floor room at the Alpha Gamma Delta house on Hill Street, just a few blocks east of the Ross School of Business on the southern end of campus.
Ann Arbor Assistant Fire Chief Ellen Taylor said everyone was able to get out of the building safely, without any injuries.
"All the credit needs to go to the sorority here because they are very proactive in fire safety and they're doing drills and they've got lists, I mean, this was almost like a drill to them and they did very well," Taylor told WWJ's Ron Dewey.
The fire was contained to one room and quickly extinguished, but two of the building's floors received significant smoke damage. The American Red Cross responded to help 63 students and a house-mother who now need temporary housing.
A cause of the fire remains under investigation.
