Fire Breaks Out At Pallet Company In Southwest Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit firefighters are battling a two-alarm fire at a pallet company on the city's southwest side.
WWJ's Ron Dewey reports the fire broke out sometime before 4 a.m. Wednesday at Kamps Pallets on South Green Street, in the area of I-75 and Springwells Street.
A warehouse on the property completely collapsed, as dry wood from the commercial pallet lot fueled the flames.
Kevin Givens, a truck driver for the company, believes the fire was no accident.
"Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve off, four days off each time, they broke in the one weekend, then they came back and broke in again. We thought we had it secured, but the fire department told me that the side door on the far side of the building was wide open when they got here. So, they must have gotten in again," he said.
Givens said thieves are breaking into the business and thinks they're to blame.
"They're stealing the wire and copper and all that, you know, they steal anything, that's all they're doing. This is a bummer, you know, this is where I make my money, this is my living right here. I don't know what's going to happen now," he said.
Givens said there were plans to move the business to another part of the city toward the end of the year, but those plans might be scrapped for now.
It's not yet clear what caused the fire. No injuries were reported. An investigation is ongoing.
