Figuring Out Factorials The Fun Way

Most kids struggle when they first learn about multiplication, so to taking that to another level by introducing factorials can seem scary.

But factorials, the mysterious exclamation point found in some equations, are a way of expressing that the number will be multiplied by each whole number smaller than it, all the way to the number one.

"Anno's Mysterious Multiplying Jar," by Masaichiro and Mitsumasa Anno is a picture book that explains the concept through the contents of a single magical jar. For kids and adults, the book is a clear explanation of the mathematics, followed by a few pages in which the book is described in equations.
