Fielder Breaks Out Of Slump
1B Prince Fielder lined a two-run double to deep center field in the first inning Monday for his first hit in 23 official at-bats and then singled his next two times up. Fielder hit a curve for his first single, a pitch that had been giving him problems recently, and then pulled an inside fastball for his second single; he hasn't seen many of those all year.
--LHP Drew Smyly gave up a pair of two-run home runs Monday night, which ended his string of five straight six-inning starts. Smyly was taken out after five innings holding a 5-4 lead but was denied his second victory when the White Sox scored three runs in the sixth off rookie RHP Luke Putkonen. Smyly had trouble keeping the ball down in the first two innings and his first six outs came on balls hit in the air. He settled in after that until LF Dayan Viciedo slammed a hanging curve for a two-run home run. He finished the inning with no further dame but left after throwing 69 pitches. It was the second time Chicago had faced Smyly and the southpaw noted "they were a little more aggressive. I left those two (home run) pitches out over the plate."
