Field Of Flags War Memorial Comes To Farmington Hills
FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) More than 6,500 Americans flags will adorn the grounds outside a local church beginning this weekend.
Started in 2005 by a church in Connecticut, each flag represents one American solider killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This is the first time the memorial has traveled to Michigan. Pastor Gordon Steinke of Famington Hills Church of God, 25717 Power Road, said he is honored to host the display May 4 through May 27 and said the public is welcome to stop by anytime.
Special services will be held this weekend as the flags are planted in the ground. The first service happens at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4. Get the complete schedule here.
Why is the church doing this?
On their website, they say it's because they want to "pay tribute to the spirit of hope," adding the church believes in freedom, honoring all those who have served their country and sacrificed themselves because they love others.
"We do this without emphasis on politics or a specific religion," the church says on its website.
