Feds give $1.5 Million for Great Lakes Cleanup
The federal government has awarded 1.5 million dollars to the Michigan Sea Grant program for two Great Lakes cleanup projects.
One project will build underwater reefs to improve habitat in the St. Clair River for native fish such as whitefish, walleye and sturgeon.
The second project will encourage boaters and marinas to reduce pollution by developing standards for marinas that want to be designated as "clean operators."
The Environmental Protection Agency grant is part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a five billion dollar plan to reduce pollution and fight invasive species.
Michigan Sea Grant involves scientists from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.
