Federally-Funded Unemployment Benefits Reduced
LANSING (WWJ/AP) - Michigan residents will no longer be able to receive some federally-funded benefits because the state's unemployment rate has fallen below nine percent.
State officials say the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program, which provides unemployment benefits for people who have already collected all of the state benefits for which they are eligible, has been cut as a direct result of across the board budget cuts administered by the federal government, known as sequestration.
People who exhaust their Tier 3 benefits after April 13 will no longer be able to make a Tier 4 claim under the EUC program. People currently receiving Tier 4 benefits can continue to receive any remaining benefits until they have been exhausted.
Tier 4 provides up to seven weeks of benefits in states with unemployment rates of at least nine percent. About 205,000 people claim unemployment benefits in Michigan.
