FBI Identifies Man Who Shot Task Force Officer During Special Operation

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ/AP) -- The FBI has released the identity of the suspect who shot a task force officer near a Southfield hotel on Friday night.

Authorities have identified the deceased suspect as Rakeem Bentley of Kentucky.

The FBI's Southeast Michigan Trafficking and Exploitation Crimes task force was conducting a special operation when shots were exchanged between the 24-year-old and an FBI task force officer outside the Southfield Marriott on Northwestern Highway.

Michigan State Police spokesman Michael Shaw says the man identified as a suspect shot the unidentified officer in the chest but he was wearing body armor.

The officer returned fire, and investigators say he killed the suspect.

The officer had minor injuries.

Shaw says Detroit's North American International Auto Show, which opened to the public Saturday, "naturally brings a type of human trafficking." He tells the Detroit Free Press that the trafficking doesn't involve children but declined to elaborate.
