Father Of Girl Shot By Police Faces Trial For Murder
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The father of a 7-year-old Detroit girl shot and killed during a police raid on their home faces trial in the earlier shooting death of a teenager outside a convenience store.
The Wayne County prosecutor's office says Charles Jones was bound over Thursday to circuit court on first-degree murder and perjury charges. Jones' is jailed pending an arraignment set for Feb. 2.
Jones is accused of aiding Chauncey Owens in the May 2010 slaying of 17-year-old Je'rean Blake. Two days after Blake was killed, police raided Jones' home looking for Owens.
A sleeping Aiyana Stanley-Jones received a fatal bullet in the head during the raid, which was taped by a reality TV show and eventually led to a ban on camera crews tailing Detroit cops.
Following a year-long investigation, Officer Joseph Weekley, a member of the Detroit Police Special Response Team, was charged with manslaughter in the girl's death. Weekley's attorney Steven Fishman has said his client didn't do anything wrong and was "singled out" for charges in the case. He faces trial next spring.
Owens also is charged with first-degree murder and has a pretrial hearing set for Feb. 3.
Aiyana's family has filed a civil suit against the city and the police department.
