Fatal Shooting In Highland Park
HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - Police are investigating a deadly shooting in Highland Park.
The State Police Crime Lab from Northville was processing the crime scene, Monday, which consisted of one car and one person's body in the driver's seat.
WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell reports the four-door, late-model 1990's or early 2000's burgundy Chevy Malibu came to rest against the barrier wall of the East Davidson Freeway, along the service drive, just before Oakland Avenue.
Highland Park Police Chief Lorenzo Veal said the shooting occurred in broad daylight.
"It was 11:05 when the first call came in and then, a few minutes after that, 11:06 or :07, there was a second call, said there was an accident and there was probably a shooting involved with it," Veal said.
"We know that they saw a little bit more, and then they made the second call. Everybody, at that point, was sort of in a panic," he said.
Veal said daytime shootings like this one aren't necessarily unusual.
"It depends on the circumstances and how passionate the person was, or what drove them to that point. Like I said, it could have been a road rage incident, and that happens instantly and it happens right then," he said.
The front windshield has a hole in the passenger's side. The back window is completely gone, apparently shot out. Both passenger doors were left open, suggesting possibly that people got out when the car came to a stop.
Police offered no information about the victim's identity as the investigation continues.
