Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash Shuts Down I-94 In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - Police were forced to close a stretch of I-94 on Detroit's east side Thursday morning after a fatal hit-and-run accident.
Investigators say there were actually two separate accidents on westbound I-94 at Chalmers around 2:20 a.m. In both crashes, police say one of the drivers fled the scene.
The fatal crash happened when a woman was hit by an oncoming vehicle after exiting a white sedan, which was stopped on the right shoulder of the freeway. Investigators think the woman and her boyfriend were arguing when the couple pulled over and the woman got out of the car.
The woman, identified as 22-year-old Carlita Charmaine Young of Detroit, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the driver who hit the woman, believed to be a man in his 60s, stopped at the crash momentarily and took off running. Police are still searching for that driver.
Another accident happened nearby the scene of the fatal crash just shortly thereafter. Police say the driver of Oldsmobile slowed down to pass the crash scene when their vehicle was hit by another driver. Police say the driver of the Oldsmobile stopped their car and then fled the scene on foot. Police are also still searching for that driver.
Michigan State Police reopened the freeway shortly before 7 a.m. after a massive amount of debris from the accidents was cleared from the road.
An investigation is ongoing. Police say alcohol may have been a factor in the crashes.
