Fatal Crash Along I-94
Police say a young mother died, Friday morning, in a crash along I-94, west of Ann Arbor. State Police in Ypsilanti tell WWJ the Port Huron the woman, driving to her job in Jackson, was killed when her van left the westbound lanes and crashed into a tree.
She's identified as 33-year-old Stacey Crawford.
WWJ's Bill Szumanksi described the scene from Chopper 950.
"It's one of those passenger vans, rolled off the freeway, went up an embankment and through, what's the beginning of a little farm field here, and slammed into a tree. It's the compartment, the cab compartment the roof of that that's crushed into this tree. And there's very little left of that now," Szumanksi said.
State police in Ypsilanti say it appears the Crawford fell asleep at the wheel, because there were no skid marks on the road. Her van gradually drifted off the freeway and rolled several times before colliding with the tree.
Crawford was airlifted to the University of Michigan Hospitals where she was pronounced dead.
There were no passengers in the vehicle and no other motorists were injured in the accident.
