Northbound Southfield Freeway Reopens After Fatal Accident
DETROIT (WWJ) - Michigan State Police say one person is dead following a two-car crash on the Southfield Freeway.
WWJ's Ron Dewey reports the accident happened just before 4 a.m. Wednesday on northbound M-39 between McNichols and 7 Mile roads.
Police say witnesses reported that a 1993 Saturn was traveling northbound on M-39 when the driver lost control just north of McNichols and struck a guard rail. A second vehicle, a 2000 Ford Windstar, was also travelling northbound on M-39 and struck the Saturn, which was stopped in the roadway.
Police say the driver of the Windstar is believed to have been talking on their cell phone at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Saturn, a 35-year-old woman from Detroit, was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police say the woman was not wearing a seatbelt. Her identity was not immediately released.
Police say alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
Northbound Southfield Freeway was closed for about three hours as police investigated, but has since reopened.
Michigan State Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at 248-584-5740.
