Farmington Hills Man Concerned About Missing Nephew In Syria
FARMINGTON HILLS (WWJ) - A relative of a 21-year-old who was living in Michigan says he's been missing nearly three weeks after traveling to Syria.
Firas Nashef of Farmington Hills told WWJ's Beth Fisher that his nephew Obada Mzaik boarded a flight for Damascus early January at Detroit Metropolitan Airport but wasn't seen exiting immigration clearance in Syria.
"The brother made it through the airport terminal and Obada stayed there ... the brother was told that Obada will stay overnight and he will be released and that was the last we heard of him," said Nashef.
Nashef says that his nephew has dual U.S and Syrian citizenship and was detained in Syria in for 36 days last summer and was released without any charges.
The family said it tried to follow-up with Syrian authorities and U.S. officials in Damascus without success.
Nashef says that he fears for his nephew's life because of the human rights violations happening in Syria.
