Farmington Hills Harrison Wins D-2 Championship
Farmington Hills Harrison won its 13th state championship Friday by beating Lowell 38-28 in the Division 2 finals at Ford Field.
Senior quarterback Tommy Vento threw three touchdowns and rushed for another in the Hawks' record 13th state championship.
Lowell (11-3) appeared to be in control, leading 21-10 midway through the third quarter on three rushing scores by quarterback Gabe Dean. The Red Arrows then began to turn the ball over.
Harrison, which finished the year undefeated at 14-0, turned the first two turnovers into touchdowns, taking a 24-21 lead.
Lowell fumbled the ensuing kickoff that was recovered by the Hawks. Vento then hit his brother, Jake, for a 56-yard touchdown.
Dean's second interception led to another Harrison score.
Vento finished with 310 yards passing, the second-highest total in championship-game history.
Harrison won its first title since 2001.
``Everyone has been asking me about going so long between championships, but that's not how I look at it,'' said coach John Herrington, who has won all of Harrison's titles. ``OK, so we went nine years between championships, but how bad is that? A lot of schools never even win one.''
