Fans Cheer Great Season Of Wolverine Basketball
ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - A small, but loyal crowd turned out to the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor Tuesday to welcome home the Wolverines after their loss in the NCAA Championship game.
The team ran onto the court to thunderous cheers and the waving of banners thanking the team for a great season reports WWJ's Sandra McNeill.
"We want to thank you very much. I know a lot of you are doing a lot of things today and for you to welcome us back like this is very nice," said head coach John Beilein.
The recently named 2013 College Player of the Year - Trey Burke told the fans that they help take the sting out of the tough loss Monday night against Louisville.
"It was an emotional night last night and just to see you all here today, supporting us ... even through the loss - it means a lot to us and it is definitely lifting our spirits," Burke said.
Burke gave no hints as to whether he'd be back next season at Michigan for another chance to win the NCAA title or go into the NBA draft:
"I'm not sure," said Burke. "I haven't set a time table - it's still a decision I have to make."
Faithful fans like Serena Rabbie came to the arena to welcome home the team.
"It's incredible, I've attended about half of the home games. I can say that throughout the season I didn't really expect this team to make it this far. And it's not a bad thing but they really surprised me in the best possible way," Robbie said.
U of M guard Glenn Robinson, III told the crowd the season was a success.
"These guys sitting down here at the beginning of the year - we had a goal of putting Michigan basketball back on the map," he said. "I just want to thank all you guys for helping us accomplish that."
Forward Mitch McGary thanked the crowd for their support.
"It's a blessing to have such a true fan base, like you guys, to support us each and every day, win or lose," said McGary. "At the end of the day we are still going to be winners and leaders and the best. Go Blue."
