Talent Show For Mental Illness Awareness
LAKE ORION (WWJ) - Recent research revealed that mental illness and suicide is on the rise amongst youth in Lake Orion.
In an effort to bring awareness to the problem, the Mental Illness Needs Discussion Sessions (MINDS) awareness program is hosting "Lake Orion's Got Talent Show" fundraiser.
Former Bob Seger drummer, Charlie Martin will serve as one of the talent show's judges. Martin is also advisor to troubled youth. He said the cause is something he can relate to because he struggled with mental problems and drugs as a teen.
"This path was taking me further and further away from my dreams and my goals," Martin said. "So, when I got into my twenties, I just completely stopped everything, all the drugs, everything. I just focused 100 percent on my musical skills and talent, and it paid off."
Martin talked to WWJ about where the proceeds from the event will go.
"Maintaining and further developing an in-school presentation to adolescents about if you're having suicidal thoughts, don't close yourself off . Reach out, there are people who want to help you. Don't be embarrassed, don't be humiliated," Martin said.
The talent show will take place at 6 pm Saturday, March 19 at Lake Orion High School's Performing Arts Center.
