Family Safe After Apparent Firebombing On Detroit's West Side
DETROIT (WWJ) - A Detroit family scrambled to safety Wednesday morning after their home was targeted in a firebombing -- just hours after the city's Angels' Night anti-arson campaign kicked off.
Authorities say all five occupants, including a baby and two other children, made it out of the home on Virgil Street, near Telegraph Road and I-96, after it caught fire overnight.
The homeowner reportedly heard something hit the front porch and then a loud boom. The woman's next door neighbor, who did not want to be named, told WWJ's Mike Campbell he heard the commotion and sprung into action.
"That's when I stepped out the door and seen the front of the house on fire," he said. "Then we came outside and I've been trying to keep it under control with a water hose."
The fire department responded, extinguished the fire and left the scene. But about an hour later, a hot spot in the attic flared back up and the fire department was called back to the house.
One firefighter was taken to the hospital with a neck injury from a fall. No other injuries were reported.
An investigation is ongoing.
