Extended Hours In Effect At Detroit Parking Meters
DETROIT (WWJ) - Extended-hour enforcement at Detroit parking meters in downtown and mid-town is in full effect now that notices on the meters have been updated.
Detroit meter readers will be writing tickets at expired meters until 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
While Detroit City Council members are supportive of the extended hours, which could generate revenue for the city, some say motorists should be allowed more time at the meter.
"One hour is not enough," said Councilman Kwame Kenyatta, speaking at Tuesday's meeting. "Not only for those who are visiting, but you've also got thousands of people who live in downtown Detroit," he said.
"People who live in downtown Detroit are on the street at the meters. So, you've gotta keep coming out of your apartment to feed the meter every hour. It's not good," Kenyatta said.
Kenyatta said he and other members have been fielding calls, emails and text messages from Detroit residents who are upset about the extended hours.
WWJ's Florence Walton reports that while many Metro Detroit communities enforce metered parking until 10 p.m., but motorists are given a much longer time to park.
