Explosion Rocks Detroit's Orchestra Hall
DETROIT (WWJ) - An explosion in the sewer outside Orchestra Hall in Detroit.
DTE Energy and Detroit Fire are on the scene investigating. Detroit 5th Battalion Chief James Provost says an underground explosion near the buiding blew three manhole covers off; one high into the air in what he calls a sewer gas explosion.
"The explosion fed back through the conduit inside the basement of Orchestra Hall," Provost said. "There is some damage to the Hall itself. Edison is on the scene assessing the situation. They're gonna shut down the power grid in this area so they can mitigate it."
No word on how long the electricity will remain turned off.
The 2:00pm Sphinx concert and competition that was scheduled at Orchestra Hall had to be moved to Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor.
