Explosion on Detroit's East Side
DETROIT (WWJ) - About a dozen Detroit residents were forced out into the cold late Tuesday night after an explosion rocked their east side apartment building. DTE Energy reports that this was not a gas explosion.
"Our initial investigation of the incident shows that there's no indication that natural gas played a role in the fire or the explosion," said Lee Singer, DTE Energy.
The blast and fire happened in an unoccupied unit on the third floor of the complex near Whittier and Kelly on the city's east side. One vacant unit was destroyed and several others were damaged.
American Red Cross was on the scene afterward to assist families affected by the explosion. The city also reacted quickly to the situation.
"The utility company was there and they shut off electricity and gas," said American Red Cross Spokesperson John Mozena. "Detroit Police, Detroit Fire, Homeland Security and their disaster management were all there as well."
No injuries have been reported and authorities are continuing their investigation as to the cause of the explosion.
