Experts: No Danger To Wells From Mich. Gas Leak
WHITE OAK TOWNSHIP (AP) - Environmental experts say an Ingham County gasoline leak shouldn't harm residents' drinking water.
They also say it's unlikely contamination from the Marathon Pipe Line LLC leak will affect the Red Cedar River watershed and neighboring communities.
Michigan Department of Environmental Quality project manager Kim Sakowski tells the Lansing State Journal the plume of gasoline has been contained.
A White Oak Township farmer discovered gasoline April 13 in a drainage ditch near his property. Marathon Pipe Line estimates between 294,000 and 462,000 gallons have leaked.
Sakowski says there's no evidence residential wells are contaminated.
County Drain Commissioner Patrick Lindemann says he's satisfied with Marathon's efforts to stop gas from spreading.
A community meeting at which White Oak Township residents can hear from Marathon Pipe Line officials is scheduled for Thursday.
