Exhibit Features Pollution's Effects On Detroit Neighborhood

DETROIT (AP) — An exhibit featuring photographs of a southwestern Detroit neighborhood and the effects of pollution within it is opening at an area church.

The exhibit is set to open Sunday at Trinity-St. Mark's United Church of Christ. Photographer Emma Lockridge has spent several years chronicling the community known as "The Hole" that's near a Marathon Petroleum refinery.

Lockridge is an environmental justice organizer for Michigan United, an advocacy coalition and exhibit sponsor.

Ohio-based Marathon reached an agreement with the federal government earlier this year to reduce air pollution at the refinery. Marathon agreed to spend millions to shut down a flare -- a mechanical device used to combust waste gases -- and install systems that capture and recycle gases that otherwise would be sent to flares.
