Ex-Red Wing McCarty, Wife Drop Protection Orders
PONTIAC (WWJ/AP) - Retired NHL player Darren McCarty and his wife have dropped personal protection orders against three of four former friends in suburban Detroit.
The veteran of 15 NHL seasons who won four Stanley Cups with the Red Wings claimed harassment by the three women and one man.
Orders against the man and two of the women have been dismissed. The order involving Tonya Juhl, an ex-girlfriend of McCarty, remains in effect.
McCarty and his wife, Sheryl, claimed the four tried to draw McCarty back into a partying lifestyle. McCarty has said harassment has included death threats. The former pals also allegedly sent threatening text messages and wrote nasty things about the couple on social media.
The McCartys were reportedly being harassed at their jobs, too; he's been working for the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association and a pawn shop, while Sheryl McCarty works at Beaumont Hospital.
Juhl challenged the personal protection order in Oakland County court. On Wednesday, she testified she didn't threaten the McCartys. The next hearing is July 25.
McCarty famously helped the Wings win the Stanley Cup four times. He spent 13 seasons with the Red Wings before retiring in 2009. In his personal life, the hockey great went through rehab for alcohol addiction in the 1990s, and filed for bankruptcy in 2005. Recently, he starred in episodes of "Hard Core Pawn," a reality TV show about workers at the Detroit pawn shop.
