Ex-Red Wing Denies He Owes $1.6M For Hit
GRAND RAPIDS (WWJ/AP) - Former Detroit Red Wing Kevin Miller denies he owes a $1.6 million judgment to an insurance company for a hit during a 2000 Swiss league game that ended a player's career.
Miller's hit on Andrew McKim caused the Canadian to suffer a severe concussion and neck injuries.
The Swiss insurance company is trying to collect from Miller and wants a U.S. District Court judge to recognize a Switzerland court's $1 million judgment against him. The figure has since increased to $1.6 million with interest and costs.
Miller's lawyer, Douglas Donnell, says the Swiss award "was rendered in circumstances that raise substantial doubt about the integrity of the rendering court with respect to the judgment."
Donnell claims Miller was denied the opportunity to call certain witnesses or present important evidence, The Grand Rapids Press reported. He said the judgment "may have been obtained by fraud" that deprived Miller the opportunity to present his case in the Swiss court.
Miller played for the Red Wings and several other NHL teams.
