Ex-Mayor Kilpatrick's Sister Files For Bankruptcy
DETROIT (AP) - The sister of ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has filed for bankruptcy.
The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press report Monday that Ayanna Kilpatrick claims to owe $345,000 and have monthly expenses of over $3,900. She filed for bankruptcy last week.
Kwame Kilpatrick faced criminal charges related to a text-messaging scandal and resigned in 2008. He later served time in jail and prison and faces a federal corruption trial.
Ayanna Kilpatrick says she owes $209,000 to a bank and $54,000 in back taxes.
A judge ruled last year that she and her company AKtion Enterprises couldn't profit from the sale of her brother's memoirs until he paid restitution tied to the criminal case.
She has declined comment on the bankruptcy.
