Ex-Hockey Coach Pleads Guilty To Sex Assault

A former Grosse Pointe South high school hockey coach serving a federal sentence for child pornography has pleaded guilty to state charges of sexual assault.

Robert Bopp  returned to Wayne County Circuit Court from a federal prison in California to plead guilty to two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Bopp and an accomplice allegedly had sex with a 15-year-old Farmington Hills boy last year. Police say they removed boxes of child porn from his home in the course of the investigation into the rape case.

Sentencing in this case has been scheduled for January 21st.

Maria Miller, a spokeswoman for prosecutors, says Bopp likely will receive a minimum prison sentence of 17 ½ years, to be served at the same time as his 22-year federal sentence.  The maximum sentence in this case is 30 years.

The cases grew out of an investigation of Bopp paying a drug-addicted teen boy for oral sex.

A hockey coach for 16 years, Bopp coached at Grosse Pointe South High School and led the Blue Devils to the 2007 state championship game.
