Ex-DPS Employee Sentenced To Two Years In Prison
A former Detroit Public Schools employee who sent paychecks to dead employees will spend two years in prison.
The U.S. Attorney's office says Toni Gilbert, who was a payroll manager for DPS, will also have to pay 672-thousand dollars in restitution.
Investigators say along with sending checks to deceased employees between 2000 and 2005, Gilbert also issued regular paychecks to Anton Carter who had retired from the district and was receiving disability checks from DPS.
Carter is spending six months in prison and has to pay back 378-thousand dollars in restitution.
"Stealing money from our schools, when our school system is already financially strapped, robs our children of their future," United States Attorney Barbara McQuade said in a statement.
Both Gilbert and Carter will serve a 3 year term of supervised release once their custodial sentence has been served.
