Ex-Convict Charged With Murder In Fatal Bus Stop Shooting
HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ/AP) - An ex-convict who spent 20 years in prison for second-degree murder has been charged in the fatal shooting of an Army veteran at a Detroit-area bus stop.
Malcolm Benson is accused of robbing and killing 59-year-old Stanley Carter, who was waiting for a bus in Highland Park. He was returned to jail Friday without bond.
During the investigation it was also discovered that in the early morning hours shortly before the homicide, Benson sexually assaulted a Highland Park woman near the area where Carter was killed, according to prosecutors.
The 50-year-old Benson, who was released from prison in January, is charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, felon in possession of a firearm and felony firearm.
The shooting happened just after 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16 as Cater was among a group of people waiting for a bus in the 11800 block of Woodward. It's alleged that Benson robbed and fatally shot Carter one time in the chest. Carter collapsed in a nearby parking lot after the shooting. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators say information from the public led police to a Palmer Park-area apartment where Benson was hiding. He was arrested without incident.
Benson is due back in court for a probably cause hearing on October 6.
According to Michigan Department of Corrections records, Benson pleaded no contest to charge of second degree murder and felony firearm in a case in Wayne County in 1995. He was listed as a parole absconder as of the day of the shooting.
