Ex-Con Gets 32 Years In Prison For Michigan State Student's Murder
LANSING (WWJ/AP) - A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to 32 to 48 years in prison for second-degree murder and armed robbery in the slaying of a Michigan State University student at his off-campus apartment.
Marquay McCoy of Grand Rapids pleaded guilty March 6 in Ingham County Circuit Court in Lansing. Judge Clinton Canady sentenced him Wednesday.
McCoy admitted he fatally shot Dominique Nolff, a 20-year-old MSU sophomore, at the off-campus Cedar Village Apartments in East Lansing while trying to steal medical marijuana and a laptop. McCoy also shot and wounded Nolff's 20-year-old roommate.
Before the sentencing Wednesday, Melissa Hurt told McCoy that the killing ended a life of promise for her son. She said McCoy's action means she'll never see him graduate or marry -- and she'll ache for the rest of her life.
McCoy told the court that he went to the apartment "to rob the victim, pulled a gun out and got into an altercation and the gun started going off." Nolff was shot multiple times and later died at a hospital. His roommate was treated at a local hospital and released.
McCoy was released from jail just 24 days before the shooting after serving nine months for assaulting a police officer.
