Detroit Orientation Institute offers fall 2010 session: The Detroit Orientation Institute at Wayne State University is accepting applications for the fall session scheduled on three consecutive Thursdays, Oct. 14, 21 and 28, 2010. Program registration forms and a sample agenda are available at www.doi.wayne.edu. Due to the continuing economic climate, DOI officials say they are again making some changes and offering special discounts to make the course more affordable. The DOI continues to present a historical perspective and candid look at our area, providing participants an opportunity to see and learn about parts of Detroit that are "off the beaten path." Another option for this session suggested by a DOI alumnus -- is a special one-day rate for returning DOI alumni to attend the fall session at a cost of just $150 per day. Former participants may register for one, two or three days to build on what they learned in an earlier program. Contact Jill Horner at jmhorner@wayne.edu for more information and a special registration form. For new participants, the regular fee of $900 per person will remain and covers meals and transportation. And again this session, all staff and faculty of area colleges and universities can sign up for the WSU rate of $600. Registrations are accepted by phone or fax; however, full payment must be received by Oct. 8, 2010, to secure a Among this fall's highlights will be the opening session moderated by Detroit Free Press columnist Rochelle Riley on diversity and demographics, a fascinating backstage tour of the Detroit Opera House, a walking tour of downtown Detroit, lunch at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church and an auto industry panel at the historic T-Plex where Henry Ford designed the assembly line. And our luncheon speaker on the third day will be Cindy Pasky, president and CEO of Strategic Staffing Solutions. The DOI, now in its 19th year of operation, offers a three-day session that is beneficial to newcomers or anyone wishing to learn more about the city and metropolitan area. Business executives, professionals from nonprofit organizations, university faculty, high school teachers and administrators, government administrators and journalists typically attend.  The next scheduled session will not be offered until spring 2011. For more information, contact Ann Cuddohy Slawnik, Detroit Orientation Institute director, at (313) 577-0171, ann.slawnik@wayne.edu, or fax at (313) 577-8800.

NASA's New Views of the Universe Exhibit Hits Toledo: NASA's traveling museum exhibition, New Views of the Universe, featuring the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes, opens at Imagination Station museum in Toledo Friday, Sept. 24. The exhibit will be open through Jan. 2. Showcasing dazzling deep-space discoveries of the world's most powerful telescope, the exhibit will immerse visitors in the mystery and magnificence of the Hubble Space Telescope mission and introduce them to Hubble's successor, the James Webb Space Telescope. The 2,000 square-foot exhibit immerses visitors in the magnificence and mystery of the Hubble mission and introduces the James Webb Space Telescope. A scale model of the Hubble is the focal point of the installation. "Satellite" units incorporate hands-on activities about how the telescope works, and feature Hubble's contributions to the exploration of planets, stars, galaxies, and the universe. The exhibit contains images and data taken by Hubble of planets, galaxies, regions around black holes, and many other fascinating cosmic entities. The exhibit is comprised of backlit color images and numerous interactive displays. Using a computer, visitors will be able to "hit" Jupiter with a comet and attempt to put star clusters in order of age. Using an infrared camera, visitors can also learn about the different wavelengths of light by taking pictures of their hand in visible and infrared light. Visitors will learn about the James Webb Space Telescope, the next-generation premier space observatory, exploring deep space phenomena from distant galaxies to nearby planets and stars. The Webb Telescope will give scientists clues about the formation of the universe and the evolution of our own solar system, from the first light after the Big Bang to the formation of star systems capable of supporting life on planets like Earth. Through computer games, videos and displays, visitors will also be able to experience how the Webb telescope will work. Visitors will learn about the cutting-edge technology of the Webb telescope like one that will see the universe in infrared light. All the new technology will enable scientists to see far back in time to when galaxies first formed and make many scientific breakthroughs. Several interactive games are also featured in the exhibit. You can step through distances in the universe with the "Cosmic Distance Scale"; and "Scope it Out!" teaches players about two different types of telescopes and shows how the Webb telescope is similar, yet different than other telescopes. One display will offer a comparison between the Hubble and the Webb telescope. One eye-catching thing is the difference in the size of the mirrors on the Webb, versus the Hubble. Webb will have a much larger mirror, which means it will have excellent resolution. The completed primary mirror will be 6.6 meters (7.2 yards) in diameter, about 2.75 times larger than the Hubble's primary mirror, which is 2.4 meters (2.6 yards) in diameter. Viewers will learn about the engineering challenges of the mission, such as folding the telescope up in the rocket for launch, and unfolding it once deployed in space. The exhibit is also available on-line at the Webb telescope web site. More at http://imaginationstationtoledo.org.

Adeona to Host Investor Day on CNS Diseases: Ann Arbor-based Adeona Pharmaceuticals Inc. (Amex: AEN) will host an investor day luncheon presentation at noon Eastern time on Wednesday, Sept. 29 in New York City.  The keynote speaker will be David A. Newsome, M.D., Adeona's Senior Vice President of Research and Development. Dr. Newsome conducted the first prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled study of oral zinc supplementation in age-related macular degeneration, now the standard of care for millions of patients worldwide. Age-related macular degeneration is a disease affecting 10 million Americans and the leading cause of blindness in the older population. Dr. Newsome has authored approximately 160 peer-reviewed publications and several books. Dr. Newsome received his medical degree from Columbia University and completed an ophthalmology residency and a fellowship in retinal diseases and surgery at Harvard University. He also completed a retinal fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami. Dr. Newsome's presentation on diseases of the central nervous system will focus on the scientific infrastructure of the treatments Adeona has in clinical development for Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and dry age-related macular degeneration. Seating for the event is highly limited and by invitation only. Interested parties should contact Catherine Esposito at (212) 732-4300 to request an invitation.ssed by logging onto http://www.videonewswire.com/event.asp?id=72540 or by visiting the Company's website at www.adeonapharma.com.
