Lawrence Tech Hosts Sept. 25 Symposium On Future Of Technology: In honor of the inauguration of President Virinder Moudgil, Lawrence Technological University will host a symposium, "High Tech and Beyond … Reaching for the Technology of the Future," on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. The cross-disciplinary symposium, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Architecture Auditorium on the university's campus at 21000 West 10 Mile in Southfield. The symposium speakers will be David Behen, CIO for the State of Michigan; Vincent Dow, vice president for distribution operations at DTE Energy; Joseph Jeup, president of Joseph Jeup Inc. of Grand Rapids; and Yu-Chong Tai, professor of electrical, mechanical and bioengineering at Cal Tech. Alan McCord, associate provost and dean of graduate studies at LTU, will be the moderator, and Moudgil will be a panelist. The symposium has been planned by the deans of Lawrence Tech's Colleges of Architecture and Design, Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Management. 3rd Annual SAE International and NFPA Electric Vehicle Safety Standards Summit Slated for Oct. 18: While advances in electric vehicle and hybrid technologies help to create new opportunities in how we power our vehicles, they also can present new challenges. These include safety issues, including fire and electrical hazards. SAE International and the National Fire Protection Association will co-host the 3rd Annual Electric Vehicle Safety Standards Summit, which will be held Thursday, Oct. 18 at Cobo Center in Detroit. The summit will be held in conjunction with SAE Convergence 2012. This yearly event will continue the dialogue and partnerships which have been successful in modifying codes, standards, and attitudes to enhance safety and support the ever-increasing fleet of electric and hybrid electric vehicles in North America. Leaders of industry, including vehicle manufacturers, governmental agencies, standards developing organizations, and first and second responders will meet to discuss the codes and standards necessary to effectively address safety as it relates to electrified vehicles and their infrastructure. Previous Summits (October 2010 and September 2011) have generated collaborative efforts that examined fire and electrical safety standards affecting electric vehicles, breaking down potential barriers to these vehicles' successful integration. Claude Harris, Director, Office of Crash Avoidance Standards, U.S. Dept. of Transportation will deliver the keynote address. His presentation, "EV Safety Compliance Update" will discuss the NHTSA program to test new electric vehicles introduced for sale in the U.S. to ensure compliance with our existing safety standards, and to provide consumers information on crash performance for these vehicles. Also, the presentation will provide a summary of the issues highlighted in the EV safety symposium held by NHTSA in May 2012, a summary of EV field incidents investigated by NHTSA, and a brief summary of our EV research program in progress.
Driver Distraction, HMI Challenges For Connected Vehicles Topic Of CAR Meeting: The topic of driver distraction is in the news on a daily basis and will be the subject of the next breakfast briefing offered by the Center for Automotive Research on Sept. 28 at the VisTaTech Center at Schoolcraft College. "Driver Distraction and HMI Challenges for Connected Vehicles" will bring together experts in the field who are working to make vehicles and the various communications systems safer and easier to use for drivers. Speakers include industry experts who will offer their thoughts on how to reap the benefits of connectivity while avoiding the risks -- specifically driver distraction and overload. The event, sponsored by Agero, will focus on the latest naturalistic driving research and analysis, addressing performance of voice recognition and speech systems, for in-vehicle tasks. Managers and directors from automotive manufacturers and suppliers, and others engaged in the development of connected vehicle systems, driver assistance systems, and infotainment systems will find the briefing of particular interest. Those working in related areas, such as human factors engineering, human-machine interface, and mobile device technology, also will find value in the presentations and discussion. Northwood's 2012 International Auto Show Focuses On Ownership Experience: The annual Northwood University International Auto Show (NUIAS) features over 500 new domestic and imported cars, trucks, recreational vehicles, vans, experimental and specialty vehicles, plus various exciting automotive aftermarket products. The theme for this year's largest outdoor new car Auto Show is "Driving the Dream." With approximately 50,000 guests annually, the NUIAS is an event for the entire family. Throughout the three-day event attendees indulge themselves in the vehicles of the future as well as reminisce with the vehicles of yesterday. The event, which includes a Classic Car Show on Sunday, Oct. 7, is organized and executed by the students of Northwood University. The Auto Show will be held the weekend of Oct. 5-7 on the Michigan Campus of Northwood University located at 4000 Whiting Drive in Midland. Show hours are Friday, Oct. 5, from noon to 6 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 2012 NUIAS will be featuring a variety of exciting vehicles. The newest products from manufacturers will be featured as well as brands like Fiat, which will appear at the Auto Show for the first time since it's re-introduction to the North American automotive market. Many exhibits will line the Mall Walk and offer a variety of food, information and entertainment. The Auto Show is free of charge, offers free parking and is open to the public. Michigan Tech Enterprise Corp. Offering SBIR-STTR Classes: The MTEC SmartZone in Houghton and Michigan Technological University will host a special training workshop on Oct. 24 to help technology entrepreneurs and small businesses assess their eligibility for the government's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. Through the SBIR-STTR programs, 11 federal agencies provide over $2 billion in high-risk, non-dilutive capital annually to fund R&D at innovative small companies. The workshop covers SBIR-STTR program basics, including specific information for key agencies such as National Science Foundation, Department of Defense and National Institutes of Health. The introduction section, designed to provide enough information for attendees to determine if they would like to seriously pursue proposal development, includes details on program purpose, eligibility and sources of funding. Attendees will also learn about several of the largest agency participants and the types of research they fund. An afternoon bonus session will be held for anyone interested in the 2012 National SBIR Conference in Portland, Ore., held Nov. 13-15. This session includes an overview of the Portland conference agenda, assistance in choosing who to meet, and preparation of materials to present your idea for funding consideration.
