Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference At UM: Green chemistry and engineering can revolutionize the way we work and live by employing less toxic materials and processes in the manufacture and design of the products we use every day. Gov. Rick Snyder will present the third annual Michigan Green Chemistry Governor's Awards, recognizing efforts to advance innovation and principles of green chemistry into chemical design, manufacture or use, or promotion activities that support or implement those technologies. Wayne State To Host Ford's Sustainable Technologies Conference Oct. 27: The Ford Sustainable Technologies Conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Marvin I. Danto Engineering Development Center, Wayne State University, 5050 Anthony Wayne Drive, Detroit. Co-sponsored by the Wayne State University Office of Campus Sustainability, the College of Engineering and its Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Ford Sustainable Technologies Conference connects scientists, researchers, industry leaders and community leaders to explore the future of sustainable technologies in manufacturing. The event builds upon Wayne State's collaborative relationship with the Ford Body Exterior Department and features a mix of presentations by Ford suppliers and Wayne State University scientists. At the conference, Wayne State's Center for Automotive Research will highlight new technologies in alternative and renewable fuels, biofuels and emission controls. Caisheng Wang, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, will showcase innovations in alternative power generation systems and their practical application. Noting that sustainability has become increasingly important to the bottom line in many manufacturing organizations, Wayne State College of Engineering Dean Farshad Fotouhi hailed the significance of this conference and the university's other sustainability-focused initiatives with Ford. Wayne State and Ford recently established a mentorship program for 2012, which gives undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to shadow Ford engineers in the workplace. Ecology Center sets open house: The Ecology Center in Ann Arbor has moved -- into Michigan's greenest tenant-occupied space. The Ecology Center is the first in the state to initiate a LEED-certified green building renovation in leased office space. While renovating our new 5,000 square foot space, center officials reused or recycled every nail, piece of wood, and bit of wiring; diverted more than 3,320 cubic feet of construction waste from the landfill; salvaged 158 cubic feet of lumber; and built more than half of its desks from reused lumber and sprinkler pipe from the site; and installed non-toxic flooring, paint and wiring. The open house will be held Thursday, Nov. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 339 E. Liberty St., Suite 300, Ann Arbor.
Merit Sets "Essentials of VMware View" Class: Ann Arbor-based Merit Network Inc. wil host "VMware View: Install, Configure, Manage [V4.5]" in Ann Arbor on Feb. 28-March 2. VMware View is VMware's desktop virtualization product, allowing desktop operating systems and applications to be deployed from a server infrastructure. This hands-on, VMware-instructed course builds your skills in the VMware View suite of products: VMware View Manager, VMware View Composer, and VMware ThinApp. The course is based on the View 4.5 and ThinApp 4.6 releases; the course may be updated to View 5.0 depending on VMware's completion of the course for that software release. The class meets from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at Merit's offices, 1000 Oakbrook Drive, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104. Through Dec. 16, Merit members may register for the early registration fee of $2,295 (increasing to $2,495 after that date). Non-Members may register for $2,895. This class is typically offered for a registration fee of $2,995. Continental breakfast, beverages, and afternoon snack are provided each day. Nuance Automotive Forum Detroit 2011: The lines have blurred between smartphones and automobiles, where many cars are themselves becoming a mobile device. Equipped with hot spots and apps, consumers are experiencing the first generation connected car – and they want more. They want to be connected from anywhere – everywhere. And we've just gotten started, with truly connected cars that are 3G wireless devices on wheels with instant access to a broad range content and apps with just the simple press of a button. But engaging these systems in a safer, smarter way is of critical concern – how do you give consumers everything they want? The balance of instant gratification with minimal driver distraction is a challenge that Nuance is addressing head on. The Electrochemical Society To Meet: The Detroit Section of the Electrochemical Society will meet Monday, Oct. 31 on "Ultraporous 3D nanoarchitectures en route to energy- and size-scalable power," featuring a presentation by Debra R.
