Ferris State Sets Michigan Energy Conference: The Michigan Energy Conference continues to foster change through energy, energy innovation, technology and sustainability opportunities within Michigan. This conference provides an inclusive forum that cultivates revolutionary solutions through collaboration and learning. This annual conference will be attended by industry leaders in the fields of education, energy, energy management, public policy/governance, construction and transportation. The event will be held Thursday, Oct. 24 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Frederik Meijer Gardens, 1000 E. Beltline Ave. in Grand Rapids. HFCC To Host Biotech Day Nov. 22: Henry Ford Community College will host Biotechnology Day 2013 on Tuesday, Nov. 22, from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Andrew A. Mazzara Administrative Services & Conference Center on the main campus. Biotechnology Day 2013 speakers will include Jianping Fu, assistant professor, Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan; Brandon Good, forensic scientist from the Michigan State Police; and James Eliason, director of TechTown's Stem Cell Commercialization Center. The purpose of the event is to inform students about current applications of biotechnology; educate students on the breadth of sub-disciplines within the larger field of biotechnology, especially nanotechnology; expose students to biotechnology as a potential career path; and provide students with information about how to pursue a career in biotechnology, with particular emphasis on HFCC's Biotechnology Program. Additionally, there will be panel discussions on careers in biotechnology and a résumé workshop. There will also be a recruiting session for students interested in attending HFCC and taking classes in its Biotechnology Program. Founded in 2009, HFCC's Biotechnology Program integrates authentic work-based experiences, training in modern instrumentation and new technologies, and rigorous science content to produce adaptable technicians that support the changing workplace. Although this program centers on skills identified by regional biotechnology employers, the skills gained by students in this program will prepare them for employment in biotechnology-based industries in other regions of the country and the world. Additionally, skills gained by students in this program will prepare them for advanced training in biotechnology-related fields. The associate's in Applied Science in Biotechnology Program is an intensive two-year program designed specifically to train students for positions as biotechnology technicians in the region's molecular biology-based industries and institutions. Biotechnology Day 2013 is free and open to the public. High school students and students from neighboring colleges and universities are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served.
