Entrepreneurs Forum Returns To Automation Alley: A fine-tuned elevator pitch can open the door to funding and key partnerships for entrepreneurs. Perfecting that pitch takes practice -- and often some advice from experts and other experienced entrepreneurs. Watch up-and-coming entrepreneurs present their business plans, and then join in the discussion at the Entrepreneurial Initiative of Southeast Michigan (EISEM) Entrepreneurs Forum, presented by Automation Alley, Michigan's largest technology business association, on Nov. 10 from 8 to 10 a.m. EISEM is a series of programs designed to highlight regional entrepreneurs and their businesses and further develop their message to reach customers and investors. A cornerstone of EISEM, the Entrepreneurial Forum features business plan presentations by three emerging technology-driven companies. The short presentations are critiqued by attendees, including venture capitalists, angel investors and business professionals, who provide constructive criticism and guidance. Presenting companies for this event include 118id, Blaze Medical Devices and Are You a Human. The event will also include a keynote presentation by Resonant Venture Partners. Boost Ludington Gives You A Chance To Take Your Idea To The Bank: In celebration of Entrepreneurship Week - West Shore Community College is hosting an exciting event on Nov. 17 called Boost. This is a pitch event where 15 entrepreneurs will each get two minutes to present their Big Idea to the audience and four panelists for valuable feedback. Two winners will be selected to present to the Northern Michigan Angels or BlueWater Angels or both. You are welcome to attend as an observer or to present your big idea. There is no fee for this event and refreshments will be provided. The event begins with a 2:45 p.m. ribbon cutting of a Michgian Small Business and Technology Development Center Business Resource Center in the William M. Anderson library and an entrepreneur and professional service providers expo from 3 to 4 p.m. in the Schoenherr Campus Center Atrium. There's an overview of access to business capital presentation by Ken Kousky, president of BlueWater Angels and CEO of the MidMichigan Innovation Center, from 4 to 4:45 p.m., followed by the elevator pitch competition from 4:45 to 6:30 p.m. A networking reception at 6:30 completes the agenda. Henry Ford Community College Power Engineering Program Hosts Open Houses: Henry Ford Community College's Power Engineering Program will host four open houses called "Energy Occupations/Super Tech Boot Camp!" from 6 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 11, Nov. 18, Dec. 9, and Dec. 16. All sessions take place on Fridays in the Ghafari Room (Room T-123) in the Technology Building, located on the main campus. These informational sessions will highlight the following programs: Associate degree in Applied Science – Energy Technology-Power/Building Engineer; Certificate of achievement – Energy Technology-Power/Building Engineer Advanced; and Certificate of achievement – Energy Technology-Boiler License Review Basic. The associate degree program requires a total of 62 credit hours over a period of four consecutive semesters. Hands-on courses are held in the HFCC Co-Generation Lab with several field-based plant visits held at local power plants. This program will prepare students for employment in the power generation field with an emphasis in the power plant operator area. The Energy Technology-Power/Building Engineer Advanced certificate of achievement requires a total of 34 credits. This certificate is designed for the prospective entry-level power engineer and those seeking educational credentials in the field. It also provides two distinct study options and helps prepare students for careers in power plant operations, building and facilities operations and maintenance, as well as the HVAC commercial-industrial operations and maintenance fields. Students may select the following two options to pursue this certificate: Option A – Traditional Classroom/Lab Approach: This option provides a classroom-lab approach, including lab and field experiences required by various licensing agencies, including the City of Detroit, the City of Dearborn, the NIULPE 4th Class License, and the State of Michigan Registration for HP Boiler Operator. All courses from the Phase I – HP Boiler License Prep Program apply toward Option A. In this program, students operate boilers, engines, turbines, and heating and cooling equipment. Option B – Online Approach with Lab and/or Field Experiences: This option provides an equivalent approach to completing the program, which is 95 percent online and includes completion of mandatory power engineering labs or field experiences required by the above-mentioned licensing agencies. The Energy Technology-Boiler License Review Basic certificate of achievement requires a total of 17 credits. This is an entry-level program designed for students will work in boiler operations, power plant operations, or facility operations and maintenance fields. Upon completion, students receive a diploma presentable to local license agencies to assist in meeting the requirements to take an HP Boiler, LP Boiler, NIULPE 4th Class license exam. UM Sets Economic Conference: The University of Michigan will host its 59th annual Economic Outlook Conference Nov. 17 and 18 at the Rackham Building, 915 E. Washington St., Ann Arbor. UM economist Daniil Manaenkov will open the conference with "The U.S. Economic Outlook for 2012-2013" at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 17. Richard Curtin, director of the Surveys of Consumers at the UM Institute for Social Research, will also present "The Outlook for Consumption in 2012" at 11 a.m. The next day (Nov. 18) at 9:30 a.m., UM economist George Fulton, director of the UM Research Seminar in Quantitative Economics, will present "The 2012-2013 Outlook for the Michigan Economy."
