Capital Area IT Council to Meet: If you haven't already done so, please RSVP for the next Capital Area ITCouncil membership meeting on Thursday, Nov. 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lansing Community College Michigan Technical Education Center West Campus, at 5708 Cornerstone Drive in Lansing.The title of the November meeting is: "East Meets West (Somewhere in theMiddle)" since we have invited tech organizations from the east and westsides of the state to come to Lansing and report on the tech scenes intheir respective areas. The meeting will feature Amy Cell, vice president of talent enhancement for Ann Arbor Spark and Mac Fowler, marketing co-chair for the Grand Rapids technology industry networking group aimWest, to provide brief overviews of their organizations, describing the tech sectors in their respective areas, and talk about some of the programs and services they are providing to support these businesses. Walsh College offers info for prospective students: Prospective students are invited to hear department chairs present at the free Walsh College Accounting, Finance and Taxation Information Session, Thursday, Nov. 18, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. in the Jeffery W. Barry Center at the Troy Campus, 3838 Livernois Road, between Big Beaver and Wattles Roads. Registration is required and seating is limited. Attendees will also learn about career options and industry outlooks from Walsh College Career Services; admissions requirements and processes from Admission and Advising representatives; network with other prospective students and enjoy light refreshments. Walsh College Open Source Community Meeting Nov. 13: The public can learn web development design and techniques at a free monthly meeting of the Walsh College Open Source Community on Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Troy Campus, 3838 Livernois, in Room 199. Breakfast and registration will be 9:30 to 10 a.m., and the program will run from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants should visit www.walshcollegeopensource.com to register. The Walsh Open Source Community is a group of professionals and community members who share knowledge for all topics related to Internet technology. The group participates in open source, or shared, web-based projects and holds monthly meetings where attendees can learn various aspects of web design, development, project management, digital imaging and other useful topics to be successful in the web business. The group is also a discussion forum for how technology changes society. During the meeting, Michael Curtis will demonstrate Jing, a freeware tool, and show how to add audio, screen captures and video to websites. Curtis is from TechSmith. Thomas Pitkin will provide techniques to display Web sites on the first few pages of a Google search. Pitkin is senior vice president and director of Web marketing and e-communications for Flagstar Bank. WMSTI to meet on intellectual property: The West Michigan Science and Technology Initiative will hold a Virtual Alliance Workshop Series on "Creating and Expanding Your Intellectual Property" on Nov. 11 and Feb. 10 in Room 123 of the Grand Valley State University Cook - DeVos Center for Health Sciences, 301 Michigan St. NE, Grand Rapids. Both events run from 8:30 to 11 a.m. On Thursday, Nov. 11 it's "Creating Your Intellectual Property, Part 1." This presentation illustrates how two competing businesses treat various types of intellectual property during a product development cycle, and how their attitudes and policies impact the success of their businesses. Also presented are intellectual property due diligence and the inventor's role in patent preparation. On Thursday, Feb. 10 it's "Expanding Your Intellectual Property, Part 2", featuring information on securing foreign intellectual property rights, domain names and cybersquatting and patent licensing for small business.
