Event Notices From May 25
NFPA, SAE Sponsor EV Safety Event: The National Fire Protection Association and SAE International will co-sponsor the Second Annual Electric Vehicle Safety Standards Summit Sept. 27-28 at the Marriott Detroit Renaissance Center Hotel in Detroit. The summit is a continuation of the dialogue begun at last year's groundbreaking event initiated in order to support the rapid implementation of electric and hybrid electric vehicles in North America. The summit provides a forum in which all relevant individuals, organizations and agencies can contribute to the development of action plans regarding the codes and standards necessary to effectively address safety as it relates to electrified vehicles and their infrastructure. Last year's summit led to the identification of three areas for action plan development: vehicle charging infrastructure; battery hazards identification and protection; and training for emergency responders. A summary report of last year's Summit is available at www.nfpa.org/assets/files/PDF/Research/RFUSNEVSSSummit.pdf. Safety representatives of vehicle and equipment manufacturers, fire protection specialists, electrical safety organizations and emergency responders, as well as governmental entities at the federal, state and local level involved in enhancing consumer safety and interagency communications, are encouraged to participate in the summit. Registration information will be available on the SAE International Web site at www.sae.org/events/nevss/.
Android Software Platform is the Topic of June Mobile Monday Detroit: An in-depth exploration of the Android Software Platform is the subject of the June 13 meeting of Mobile Monday Detroit. Speakers for the evening will be Jon Oberheide, CTO of Duo Security and Walt Capers, senior software architect for Compuware. Oberheide's presentation will deconstruct Google's Android mobile platform and its security model, from the base OS, to the Android middleware, up to case studies utilizing third-party applications. As Android emerges as a leading OS in the mobile market, there's much to be learned from both the victories and failures of Google's design decisions and their impact on Android's security model. He will showcase some fun attacks used to subvert the base Android system, as well as third-party applications in use on Android handsets around the world. Capers will be discussing the use of Android NDK. He will review porting C-code to the Android platform, which is very timely in light of Google's recent push for the Android NDK r3 to enable higher-quality graphics for game development. The event will take place at the Compuware Building located at 1 Campus Martius in Detroit with the networking portion of the meeting starting at 5:30 p.m., and presentations beginning at 6:00 p.m. There is no charge to attend the meeting, but advanced registration is required at http://meetup.com/Mobile-Monday-Detroit.
