Detroit MI-SBTDC Announces Training Classes For 2013: The Detroit office of the Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center announced its training schedule though September of 2013. The Eastern Michigan University-operated MI-SBTDC service location will host Writing a Business Plan, Pre-Business Research and Know Your Numbers (financial training) classes at the GVSU Detroit Center (formerly Barden Building) located at 163 Madison in downtown Detroit. These are the first training classes at the Detroit location since moving into the GVSU Detroit Center building in 2012. Writing a Business Plan is designed for individuals who want to increase their chances for successful self-employment, the course covers business planning in detail. Specifics of marketing and finance, legal and regulatory issues, operations, and information based planning and management is key components of the workshop. The first steps for creating a business plan draft will be included along with a demonstration of the MI-SBTDC online business plan tool. Classes are slated for June 15, July 16, Aug. 20 and Sept. 17. Pre-Business Workshop classes are for those thinking of starting their own business and want to research their business idea. They will learn about market trends and opportunities to grow sales and locate new customers or to diversify their market base. Classes are scheduled for June 11, 27, July 9, 26, Aug. 6, 16, and Sept. 5, 27. Know Your Numbers (Five Keys to Using Financial Statements) is for business owners and key staff who want to have a better understanding of how to use their financial statements and to make sound business decisions. The MI-SBTDC is a statewide business assistance program that provides no-cost one-on-one counseling, training, and research support for Michigan small businesses. It annually works with more than 14,500 businesses with 56 percent being existing businesses, with many being growing companies that employ more than 10 employees. Macomb OU INCubator Lunch and Learn Offers Legal Issues Of Social Media: From noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, June 6, a "Lunch and Launch" program will be held at the Macomb-OU INCubator on "Business And Social Media: The Legal Issues." The incubator is at 6633 18 Mile Road, Sterling Heights. Do you use computers for requesting and providing quotes, obtaining job applications and displaying your product? If so, you are affected by the social media regulations. For all businesses, simply having employees mean that social media is something to be aware of and address in company policies. More often than not, at least some of your employees are using social media, which has the potential to materially affect your business. Presenter Robin Luce Herrmann is a shareholder based in Butzel Long's Bloomfield Hills office. She is a practice group leader of Butzel Long's Litigation Practice and the head of Butzel Long's Media Group. She is a 1984 graduate of the University of Michigan and a 1993 graduate of the Detroit College of Law (J.D., cum laude), where she was a managing editor of The Law Review.
