Women In Defense Michigan Hosting Charity Fundraiser: Women In Defense Michigan is hosting a charity fundraiser on January 22 to benefit the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund. The event will be held Tuesday, Jan. 22 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Star Lanes at Emagine Royal Oak, 200 Main Street, Royal Oak. Registration is $40 for WID or National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) members and $50 for non-members. On-site registration is $45 for WID or National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) members and $55 for non-members. Advance registration is encouraged; space is limited at this annual sell-out event. Registration includes open bowling, shoes, dinner, dessert, and non-alcoholic beverages. Donate $500 to receive two positions on a four-person team with representatives from prime defense contractors. Merit Offers Essentials of Groovy and Grails: In partnership with Oakland University, Merit Network is pleased to present Introduction to Web Application Development with Groovy and Grails, a five-day course Jan. 28 - Feb. 1 on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester, MI. Groovy is an object-oriented programming language for the Java platform; Grails is an open source web application framework that uses Groovy. Groovy and Grails are key components of the newest releases of Ellucian's Banner enterprise resource planning system, making the mastery of Groovy and Grails essential for developers who support Banner. Over the course of five days, you will learn the basics of Groovy and how to use the Grails framework to rapidly create sophisticated web applications. This class is 60 percent hands-on, 40 percent lecture and discussion, with the longest lecture segments lasting about 25 minutes. You will learn by doing, with immediate opportunities to apply the material to real-world problems. Introduction to Web Application Development with Groovy and Grails will be held on Monday-Friday, January 28-February 1, 2013 at the OU Incubator on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester, MI. Class will begin each day at 8:30 a.m. and end by about 4:30 p.m. The OU Incubator is located in Shotwell-Gustafson Pavilion, on the east side of Oakland's campus. Macomb-OU INCubator Talks 'Mobile Explosion': The Macomb-OU INCubator at Velocity Collaboration Center will host "The Mobile Explosion: How Can Your Business Take Advantage of Mobile Technologies to Increase Productivity and Profitability?" on Thursday, Jan. 24 from noon to 1 p.m. at the center, 6633 18 Mile Road in Sterling Heights. In this Lunch and Launch, Linda Daichendt, Executive Director of the Mobile Technology Association of Michigan (MTAM), will conduct a presentation regarding the surge in mobile technology, and how it is impacting businesses today in more ways than just the next new "app." More specifically, Linda will discuss topics such as how mobile technology is changing the way we live and the way business is conducted; how mobile technology is impacting specific verticals, and the opportunities it provides in Michigan; the options that companies can use to incorporate mobile into their business operations and marketing strategies to benefit themselves and their clients how mobile technologies will increase productivity and profitability for businesses; where a business should start in developing a mobile strategy; the current state of the mobile industry, its future and its impact on Michigan's economy. In addition to MTAM, Linda is co-founder of Mobile Monday Michigan and a co-host/co-producer of the international mobile marketing podcast series, "The Mobile Marketing Review." Her daily focus is on educating Michigan business, government and education stakeholders about the opportunities that mobile technologies provide to substantially grow Michigan's economy, as well as insuring the ability for all Michigan residents to benefit from the jobs and businesses created by those technologies.
