Inaugural Failure-Lab Performance Coming to Grand Rapids: A diverse group of storytellers and entertainers brought together by a group of West Michigan business people, Failure-Lab is a live performance with storytellers sharing raw, personal failures. They will not share lessons learned. A one-minute interval in between stories and entertainers will allow for the audience to reflect and share via mobile device or pen and paper. An after party immediately following will allow for further engagement and conversation. Baker College of Flint Hosts Annual Car & Motorcycle Show May 19: Baker College of Flint will host the fourth annual Car and Motorcycle Show, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, May 19. Car and motorcycle enthusiasts, as well as the general public, are invited to attend the free event at Baker College's Center for Transportation Technology, 1717 S. Dort Highway, Flint. More than 300 cars and motorcycles are expected to be on display. There will also be live music, vendors, refreshments, and on-going tours of the CTT facility. All car and motorcycle entries will be accepted 9 a.m. - noon on May 19. There is no registration fee. The first 100 entrants will receive free lunch, dash plaques, and goodie bags. All entrants will be eligible for prizes throughout the show. Previous year's entrants have included a 1940 Ford coupe, a 1911 Whiting, an assembled open roadster, a 2011 Golgotha Sanctified motorcycle, a 1942 Harley Davidson, a 1923 T Bucket, and a variety of classics, modified models, rat rods, tuners, and low riders. The day's events include live music, merchandise and service vendors, food vendors, the opportunity to measure your vehicle's torque, horsepower, and quarter-mile elapsed time on a chassis dynamometer by the Baker College student group Vehicle City Gear Head Club for a $20 club donation, an awards ceremony at approximately 2:45 p.m. for the top 25 cars, top 10 motorcycles, and other awards, including President's Choice and Dean's Choice. There will also be ongoing tours of the CTT facility, including Baker's up-to-date automotive, computer and truck labs, classrooms, multimedia rooms, and the new welding and restoration lab. The facility supports programs in auto body technician, automotive services technology, automotive service management, supply chain management, small engine and power sports technology, truck driving, automation restoration technology, and welding. Free parking and shuttle service will be available at the Perani Arena & Event Center, 3501 Lapeer Road, with handicapped parking permitted at the CTT. UM Transportation Research Institute Sets Auto Research Conference: The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute will host another of its "Focus on the Future" Automotive Research Conferences Friday, April 19 on the topic "Inside Japan: Understanding the Current and Future Japanese Domestic and Global Automotive Industry." The event runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Michigan Union's first floor Anderson Room, 530 S. State Street, Ann Arbor. As part of our series on the globalization of the automotive industry, we present our new conference entitled, Inside Japan: Understanding the Current and Future Japanese Domestic and Global Automotive Industry. Unlike our other globalization conferences, this one focuses on a developed automotive market and industry that is one of the dominant global automotive players.que when compared even to other developed auto markets. In this conference we will focus on what makes the Japan market and Japanese auto manufacturers and suppliers unique. To do this we will look at macro issues such as the auto market, government regulations, and the Japanese economy, as well as issues related to trade and labor. To discuss micro level issues, we are joined by our sponsor, Doshisha University from Kyoto, Japan, who will provide a micro level analysis of Japanese R&D workers. GVSU students to showcase engineering, computing creations: A machine that sorts Skittles by color, an iPhone app created for the Waterfront Film Festival, and a machine that turns trash into water system components for developing countries are among projects that will be part of Grand Valley State University's Project Day, April 18. It is hosted by the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing. More than 120 students from schools in the Grand Rapids area are expected to attend Project Day to see nearly 40 projects by Grand Valley students and to show them to how engineering and computing is relevant to everyday life. The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon in the Kennedy Hall of Engineering on Grand Valley's Pew Grand Rapids Campus. Members of a local high school FIRST Robotics team will display and demonstrate their competitive robot at the event. The robot throws Frisbees at targets and is managed by a remote control.
