Evacuations Ordered In Shiawassee County Train Derailment
Authorities in Shiawassee County evacuated more than two dozen residents within a mile of a derailed Canadian National Railway freight train where a tank car carrying hydrochloric acid overturned Thursday night and started leaking.
No injuries were reported. The site is in Vernon Township, near Durand, about 20 miles west-southwest of Flint and about 30 miles east-northeast of Lansing.
Eleven cars on the eastbound train derailed. The American Red Cross is helping the displaced families until its safe for them to return home.
The accident delayed an eastbound Amtrak passenger train that operates on the same track. The train was stopped in Lansing.
