Especially Rough Morning On Telegraph Road

It wasn't a smooth morning for Telegraph Road construction workers. The road's southbound side between 16 and 15 Mile was the site of a misdirected driver who made it through the lane barricade and right into some wet cement, causing quite a bit of damage to the project.

Project Superintendent Tom Benequisto, with Ajax Paving Industries explained the accident.

"Our barricade guy up by the concrete eventually stopped her, and got her out of the concrete. At that time, we held her until the police came," Benequisto said. "It is screwed up to a factor of about $20,000 worth of damage, where our guys were able to repair it. Now we'll just see if it's able to remain in place."

The mess also caused a longer-than-planned lane closure, leaving just one lane open to start the morning commute. By late morning, the repairs had been made and a second northbound lane was eventually opened.

WWJ's Mike Campbell spoke with Bill Hartsack, the project manager with Ajax Paving Industry about the expansive construction project, drivers have been snarled in for the past 6 months.

"As far as paving goes, we're nearing 75-percent completion on the project," Hartsack said. But Hartsack could not go out on a limb and say when the entire project will be complete.

According to the original MDOT release the work should be complete sometime in November or December of 2010 – a date that commuters eagerly await.
