Environmental Activist Will Be 'Dumpster Diving For A Cause' In Detroit
DETROIT (WWJ) - An environmental activist will make a stop in Detroit as he bikes 1,500 miles from Wisconsin to New York, eating only food he finds thrown away in dumpsters.
Rob Greenfield says he know it doesn't sound appealing.
"I get a lot of people who think it's gross or nasty, " he told WWJ Newsradio 950's Brian Larsen. "But it's not about me. It's about doing something to bring attention to something important."
Greenfield says the amount of Americans waste is astounding, so he's doing this to raise awareness to the cause.
"One of seven Americans is food insecure while we throw away enough food to feed every hungry American five times over," he said. "And a lot of that food is in grocery store dumpsters."
Greenfield, aside from those tho are icked out by concept, he's been getting a mostly a positive response thus far on his trip.
"Food waste seems to be something that nine out of ten people I talk to is actually passionate about when I bring it up," Greenfield said. "Everybody's response is that they're appalled by the amount of food that we're throwing away while we have hungry Americans."
Greenfield is calling his stops along his bike route "Food Waste Fiascos" during which he displays huge amounts of food found in dumpsters to create a shocking visual of food waste.
"He's inviting American's to dumpster dive and dine with him and urge grocery stores to stop dumping and start donating! " according to a media release.
Greenfield will host an event at Campus Martius in Detroit on Sunday, Aug. 31, at 5 p.m. Learn more on his blog at this link.
