Enrollment Begins For Major Cancer Prevention Study
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Enrollment for a major cancer study begins Tuesday in Metro Detroit. It is the same nationwide study that linked smoking to lung cancer, and it's back looking for new risk factors.
Macomb County Health Department Director Steve Gold said the study, performed by the American Cancer Society, hopes to get a broad cross-section of the American population.
"There's a particular goal of enrolling 25 percent of the total study of folks who are in minority populations, because minority populations tend to be underrepresented in these studies."
Participants must be between 30 and 65 years old and have never had cancer. Gold said the study will monitor participants over the next few decades.
"It's looking across very, very large numbers of people to see what emerges from their lifestyle and their environmental conditions, in the risk of developing cancer."
Enrollment starts Sept. 13 and runs through Sept. 21. The goal is to enroll at least 300,000 people.
Participants can register at the American Cancer Society Office in Southfield, the Macomb County Health Department in Mount Clemens or the ACCESS Community Health Center in Dearborn. For more information, click here.
