EMU, Union Reach Tentative Contract Deal
YPSILANTI (WWJ) - Food service and maintenance workers at Eastern Michigan University have agreed to go without pay raises for two years and contribute more toward their health insurance as part of a three-year contract agreement the union has reached with the university.
The contract covers 202 employees in AFSCME Council 25 and Local 3866.
The deal calls for a one-percent pay raise in the final year of the contract. The employees will also receive a one-time health care offset payment of $1,250 to their base salary in January 2012.
"I commend the leadership of the AFSCME bargaining team for its realistic view of the budgetary challenges facing higher education and organizations and businesses across Michigan," said David Trakul, director of employee relations and policy, in a statement.
"This was a difficult but collaborative process. We appreciate our food service and maintenance workers, and valued their input in this process," he said.
The deal still has to be approved by the rank and file and the University Board of Regents. The bargaining unit expects to have a ratification vote in mid-July.
