EMU Basketball Player Suspended Indefinitely After Assault Charge

YPSILANTI (WWJ/AP) - An Eastern Michigan University basketball player has been suspended after his 19-year-old girlfriend said he choked her during an argument at an off-campus apartment.

Glenn Bryant, a 22-year-old Detroit resident, was arrested Monday and arraigned Wednesday in Ypsilanti District Court on assault by strangulation and aggravated domestic violence charges. He's due back in court for a preliminary examination on May 7.

Police say the incident occurred around 2 p.m. April 22 in the 1000 block of Huron River Drive at the Peninsular Place apartment complex. Ypsilanti Police Detective Sgt. Tom Eberts told AnnArbor.com the woman said the argument was about "nothing in particular" and the couple, who had been dating for about one year, argues frequently. She was treated at a local hospital after talking to police.

Interim Athletic Director Melody Reifel Werner said in a statement that Bryant's suspension under the school's student-athlete discipline policy will continue "until the charges are dropped, dismissed or otherwise resolved."

"Eastern Michigan University Athletics takes this matter very seriously and is continuing to gather information about the incident from the police and the prosecutor's office," he said.

Bryant transferred in 2011 from the University of Arkansas to Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti. He played last year and averaged just over 10 points per game after sitting out the 2011-2012 season.
