Election Results: Library Millage Nixed, Public Transit Tax Gets Thumbs Up
DETROIT (WWJ) - Public transit, street taxes and a library funding measure among the issues decided by voters in Metro Detroit.
Tuesday was an election day for several communities in the state and in some areas the voting was close.
A bond proposal for the Fenton Public Schools passed by five votes and a 51-to-49 percent margin.
Voters in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township were voting on a public transit tax to raise nearly $4.4 million in annual funding. The Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority placed the 0.7-mill transit tax on the ballot in the three Washtenaw County communities and it was the only item on the ballot and was overwhelmingly approved, by a 71 percent to 29 percent margin. The new tax would cost the owner of a $200,000 home an extra $70 a year for five years.

A millage request to fund a $21.5 million expansion project of the Baldwin Public Library in Birmingham has been defeated.
Voters voted 76 percent to 24 percent to reject the project, which would have renovated the main library building and torn down and replaced two additions built decades later. Voter turnout was about 45 percent.
In the Novi Community School District, voters approved a proposal worth nearly $71-million to go toward additions, remodeling, refurnishing and installing extra security measures. The bond passed with a 72 percent margin, with only a 23 percent voter turnout. The cost to the average homeowner is $110-$180 annually over the life of the bonds.

Hamtramck Public Schools is seeking a 4-mill sinking fund levy that would last through 2023. Dearborn Heights School District wants to renew a 18-mill levy on non-homestead properties.
Riverview is asking voters to approve an $8 million bond proposal to replace city streets and water mains. Wyandotte is seeking to boost its general operating fund with a tax increase proposal of 3-mills between 2014 and 2018.
